2016 Villiers Stakes Likely for Loyalty Man

December 13th, 2016

Trainer Mike Moroney has revealed that he is yet to decide on the next point of call for Loyalty Man, but revealed Saturday’s 2016 Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) is likely to figure for the in-form gelding.

Loyalty Man has been a strong and largely consistent performer throughout his entire racing career so far; posting five race wins and a further four minors through only fourteen competitive appearances, since debuting in the spring of 2015.

Having also included the son of Fastnet Rock in nominations for a Benchmark 85 race at Randwick on Saturday, as well as a 1600m handicap at Flemington, Moroney said that he is leaning towards the Villiers Stakes 2016 with Loyalty Man, with a view of continuing north to Queensland for the Magic Millions meet in early January.

“We’ll likely pay up for all three races and then see where he draws and make a decision on Wednesday,” Moroney told Racing Victoria.

“A problem we’ve got is finding a jockey to ride him at 53kg (in the Villiers) and we’re tossing up the idea of sending Patrick Moloney up there to ride him.

“I’m keen on going to Sydney with him, mainly because we’re also keen on heading to the Magic Millions with him.

“I’m really pleased with the horse. He was luckless at Flemington and then won at Wodonga but he just seems to have got back to his old tricks.

“He was going to win by four or five lengths last start and then he wanted to pull up and do everything all wrong so hopefully he can iron that out.

“He’s done a lot of work here at Flemington right-handed and appears to handle galloping in the opposite direction really well.

“Patrick actually said the horse felt better galloping right-handed than he does working normally left-handed so hopefully he can reproduce that on race day.”

Resuming this time for seventh in the Sheen Group Handicap (1400m) on September 17th, Loyalty Man failed to fire in the Movenpick Ice Cream BM84 (1400m), but has since finished fourth in the Antler Luggage BM96 (1600m) and won the Wodonga Cup (1590m).

The 2016 Villiers Stakes field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
