Trainer Lee Freedman is excited by the prospect of classy import Sarrasin making his Australian racing debut in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Sarrasin has only made five appearances at the races since debuting in November of 2014, but the now four-year-old has more than stamped himself as one to watch in posting two wins and as many minor placings.

Having not been seen at the races since he finished second in the Group 3 Prix Du Lys Longines (2400m) in his native France in June 2015, Freedman told Racing Victoria that the Monsun entire has taken well to a year in Australia and is in great condition ahead of the Villiers Stakes 2016.

“It appears as though we’re going to get some give in the track up there, which would be nice for his first start in this country,” Freedman said.

“He’s been here for 12 months now and hasn’t raced for 18 months so we’d like to get a run into him.

“The Villiers is a tough race and it’s hard to say that he can be a winning chance in it but I’d be delighted if he could run well and then we could give him a little let up for the autumn.

“Being a Monsun he’s going to obviously get out over a further distance than 1600 but fresh he should run a nice race.

“He’s very much in the mould of a Lucas Cranach, he’s very athletic and light on his feet and not your typical dour Monsun and I think with a run under his belt it will bring him on nicely for the autumn.”

Sarrasin immediately announced himself to the European racing community upon debuting for third in the Prix Antivari (1600m) at Saint Cloud, but was immediately returned to the paddock with a view towards the 2015 season.

Resuming for a maiden race win in the Prix Caracalla (2400m), Sarrasin placed fourth in the Group 3 Prix Noailles (2100m) and broke through for his first black type success in the Listed Prix De L’Avre (2400m), in what was his only other start prior to the Prix Du Lys Longines.

The 2016 Villiers Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
