Trainer Tony McEvoy is confident that talented stayer Big Memory is not without a chance when he lines up for the 2016 Villiers Stakes (1600m) first-up at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

A strong and consistent performer throughout his entire racing career so far, Big Memory resumed in spring for a classy third in the Spring Is The Season Handicap (1700m) at Flemington, and while failing to fire in the Moniek Sambor Tile Import Handicap (1700m), was last seen running a close second in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) on October 8th.

Citing his proven first-up ability over shorter distances, McEvoy told The Courier Mail that he believes the Duke Of Marmalade gelding is a live chance in the Villiers Stakes 2016 and that his class could count for everything in the feature race.

“If you look at his record, his mile fresh form is excellent,” McEvoy said.

“The only thing different this time is he is not coming off a spell and he has an incredible base and he was ready to run in the Caulfield Cup in October.

“Hopefully that doesn’t make him too dour but I don’t think it will and he is telling me he is very sharp and I think it might work in his favour.

“He is a good galloper this fella, he runs very well fresh and he has been very effective at Randwick being beaten a nose in a stakes race, so I think he will run a cheeky race.

“He trialled really nicely and he has bounced out of the trial very well.

“We had to stop his spring a third of the way in when he hurt his hock and I scratched him the day before the Caulfield Cup.

“We have basically got him back on track and he is bouncing and well.

“There is this race and if he ran well we could look at the Gosford Cup.”

Big Memory has posted a commendable race record of four wins and a further fifteen minors through thirty-four career starts so far.

Charged with carrying only 54.5kgs, Big Memory has been confirmed to be partnered by Tommy Berry in the 2016 Villiers Stakes and is currently available at a quote of $21 with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
